Scholarship Fund for Latino Outreach at Hackley School
My sister Janeen Puente and I both graduated from Hackley School in ’92 and ’91 respectively. Knowing how important and special our time on the Hackley campus will always remain to our family, I wanted to develop a program that would provide other Latino children with the same opportunities we had. As the Associate Director of Admissions at Hackley School, three years ago I helped create an outreach program which targets bright, motivated, local Latino children for possible admission to our school. This effort has since blossomed into a year-round academic program which provides local Latino boys and girls between the 5 th and 8 th grades with summer courses, English as a Second Language classes, transportation, books, money for school trips and music lessons, as well as financial aid grants to those accepted for full admission to Hackley School.
We have found and continue to find these amazing students by talking and volunteering at local community centers, schools, and parish halls. The demand for admission to the program has increased dramatically over the past year. We have responded by increasing the range of our program offerings to accommodate the growing number of potential students. In addition to our standard program, we now offer potential students an intensive ten-week evening and weekend English and writing enrichment course given in the spring and an eight-week full-time summer program.
Hackley, founded in 1899, just celebrated its centennial year. The school has provided a traditional, rigorous, and personalized education with an emphasis on writing and critical thinking skills for over 100 years. In honor of my grandfather, Hackley School has created the Tito Puente Scholarship Fund for Latino Outreach. This fund provides financing for Latino students to attend this outstanding college preparatory school on the Hudson River.
